[5/8] | Better, Smarter, Richer: 7 Business Principles Leading You to Success

Although creative entrepreneurs are very talented and driven, many have no idea how to turn what they love to do into a livelihood. They are chronically overworked and often abysmally underpaid. Creatives have been struggling forever to find ways to be the creator of the product as well as the independent owner of their business. No news there, right?

Luckily to help artists and creatives with this little conundrum, we are fortunate in the Portland area to have Jackie B. Peterson, hands down the most effective business mentor and adviser to artist-entrepreneurs in the industry. Jackie has 30+ years of professional experience working with creative entrepreneurs, as a CPA, business consultant and teacher, and has identified seven principles that when followed by creative entrepreneurs, help them find the financial success they have been seeking.

This past Saturday I participated in a WAN class lead by Jackie Peterson. The course materials included a copy of her workbook ‘Better, Smart, Richer: Seven Business Principles for Creative Entrepreneurs.’ As a frustrated animator/ illustrator/ collage artist I decided to attend to see what I could learn about making my business work.

I learned two things right off the bat. One, I’m not the only one out there with fears and doubts about success and two, the only way to succeed is to focus, focus, focus. It turns out that focus is one of the big keys to success., Like many artists I tend to scatter myself around between the day job that pays the bills, the fun projects I pick up on a whim, the work I specifically try to tailor to a market and, last and often least, the animation that I’ve always loved to do. Jackie explained how digging deep into one area, that true area of your passion, will help you become an expert in your field and create a demand for what you do. Rather then flailing about trying to be all things to all people, be specific and create a niche.

In the few hours we had for the class we did not make it through the entire workbook, but the inspiration and information I did receive has me eager to get into the remaining exercises. I’d like to thank Jackie for her time and knowledge. Her book, geared to helping creatives get their businesses running in a way that makes sense to the art’s mind, is invaluable. I would also like to thank WAN for continuing to provide amazing resources and opportunities meant to ensure my success.
